eclipse 3.2 svn Commit failed item is out of date delete 409 conflict

i'm running eclipse on ubuntu intrepid 8.10 linux:
Version: 3.2.2 Build id: M20070212-1330 (Ubuntu version: 3.2.2-5ubuntu2)

today i was having a lot of trouble moving folders around and then syncing and committing the changes to svn. i was getting errors like:

svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: Item '/usr' is out of date
svn: DELETE of '/svn/jboss4_server_domain/!svn/wrk/f5ebff03-1f01-0010-9999-ab7890bedcc4/usr': 409 Conflict (https://svn.example.com)

i found out that problems arise when i'm in the java ee view mode and try to commit a change by simply right clicking on a folder or file and then:
team > commit

i found that if i wanted to avoid these commit problems then i needed to do:
team > synchronize with repository

and THEN do my commit command(s)

eclipse/subclipse would just flip out if i tried it outside of the synchronizing view for some reason.
